Chapter Seventeen

“Dance with me.” Gail tugged Sam’s hands. They were enjoying a drink at Crush. The place was in full swing, the dance floor crowded, and the music loud, but not too loud in the corner at their table. Jake accompanied Sam after work and Thomas and Becca had shown up with Gail.

“No, thanks.” Although the lights were low, he could make out her pout. Their relationship should have still been new, scary, and tentative, but it felt solid and concrete after practically living together the last couple of weeks. It wasn’t only the closeness or the love—it also had to do with respect and trust. Especially trust on her part, because he refused to tell her anything about his assignment and never talked about his work.

“This is getting old, Sam,” she huffed, sitting beside him. “You need to learn to dance.”

“Why?”

“I want to dance with you.” She slid her arm around his shoulders.

“I’m a hopeless case, honey. And you’re not wearing steel toe boots. I’m going to ruin those sexy little toes of yours.”

“Please.”

Any other time, if she pleaded for anything else, he’d give her what she wanted. But he’d never been able to dance. “Why?” He gestured toward the dance floor. “No one looks good doing it. Take that man. Is he trying to get change out of his pocket?”

Gail’s uncontrolled laughter made him grin.

“And what about that girl?” He pointed in the direction of another dancer. “She must be in a rock band. She keeps playing the air guitar.”

“Well, maybe. But at least they’re enjoying themselves.”

“Do you think so? If they’re having a good time, why does that man have the most pained expression on his face, like he’s waiting for aliens to beam him up?”

“Yes, but the woman he’s with seems to be in ecstasy.”

He dropped his voice and murmured in her ear. “If you want ecstasy we’ll need to leave, counselor.”

She drew back and regarded him with narrowed eyes. “Tonight I would rather dance.”

“Liar.” His fingers tickled the outside of her naked thigh. He loved the flirty skirts she wore.

Her face and neck flushed.

Memories of their times together reeled through his mind. She was giving and generous, totally yielding, and did it with a joy he could never deny or take for granted. Whole heart and soul she loved him. His heart beat faster thinking about her...and her ecstasy.

“Come on, Gail, I’ll dance with you.” Jake glared at Sam. “I’m not stupid enough to let this beautiful woman get away from me.”

Sam held up his beer bottle in salute.

“You’re a peach, Jake.” Before she stood, she spoke softly to Sam, “You will make this up to me.” The low hum of her voice never ceased to arouse him. She rose and straightened, but Sam grabbed her wrist and yanked her back down.

They were eye to eye. “Any time, any where, any way, sweetheart.” He smacked his lips to hers.

While Jake led her to the dance floor, she glanced over her shoulder. She pointed at him and mouthed, You’re mine.
